Have you ever found yourself staring at the night sky, under the full moon’s gaze, feeling a primal pull in your soul? The first moon of the year is incredibly special, for it’s the Wolf Moon, and this gorgeous, sparkling celestial being wants you to connect with yourself through her magic.
Embracing the Night’s Call
So, what’s the deal with the Wolf Moon, you ask? Picture this: a cold, crisp night in January, the first full moon of the year lighting up the velvet sky, and the distant howls of wolves—or maybe just your neighbor’s overly enthusiastic husky. This moon gets its name from the olden times when wolves would gather and howl at the moon in hunger during the dead of winter. Spooky, right? But oh-so-mesmerizing. Winter is the new spooky season, and we have a Wolf Moon that agrees!
A Celestial Origin Story
The Wolf Moon isn’t just a once-a-year cosmic event full of beauty and wonder; it’s a beacon of magic and transformation. It symbolizes a time of awakening, introspection, and the stirring of our primal instincts. It’s when we shed the old and embrace the new, much like a wolf shedding its winter coat—except you won’t need a lint roller.
If you feel like you never had the time to sit down over the holidays to think about what you want for your new year, the Wolf Moon is a perfect day and evening to do this. In some ways, you could consider the Wolf Moon a witchy new year—at least, that’s what this witch will be doing tonight and every year henceforth. (I feel so writerly when I use the word henceforth)!
Wolf Moon Magic
Now, let’s talk magic. The full Wolf Moon is a potent time for spells and rituals, especially for those leaning into their inner witch or wizard—no judgment if your wand is just a fancy stick. That’s what the first wands were, so carry on! This moon phase is perfect for setting intentions for the year, reflecting on your personal growth, and, of course, a bit of mystical mischief. Are you ready to weave some wolfy, witchy magic? Me too!
Harnessing the Moon’s Energy
Here’s a Pagan spell to harness the energy of the Wolf Moon. It’s simple (just as I like my magic) and powerful (again, just as I like my magic)!
Supplies:
A quiet spot—preferably outdoors, but a cozy nook by the window works too, especially if, like me, you’re in a location where January temperatures do not fck around!
A white candle—for new beginnings, clearing your energies and wiping the slate clean.
A small bowl or jar of water—to reflect the moon’s energy. Bonus: collect this water from fresh snow outside earlier in the day and let it melt for tonight’s Moonspell.
Herbs, sage (smudge stick), and/or moon-embodied incense. Incenses and herbs often associated with the moon include sandalwood, frankincense, myrrh, camphor, lavender, every type of sage, especially white sage, chamomile, jasmine, moonflower, silver willow, and mugwort.
White rocks, crystals, moonstones—or just a single rock/stone/crystal.
Wolf Moonspell:
Set the Scene: Find your quiet spot and sit comfortably. Light your candle and place the bowl of water before you, where it can catch the moon’s reflection.
Clear the Air: Light the sage or your moonspell-infused incense of choice. Let it smolder and waft the smoke around your space to cleanse the vibes. Imagine any negativity or old energy dissipating into the night.
Moon Bathing: Gently place your stones/crystals into the water. Imagine your body and soul fully immersed in the healing, cleansing waters of a moonlit lake, ocean, or river. Bonus: if you can swim skyclad (naked) in a body of water in January under a full Wolf Moon, there is no need for the stone; do this instead! In warmer climates, this can be possible! Or if you have a hot tub by a window, be the gemstone: immerse yourself in the water.
Moon Gazing: Take a moment—or many—to feast your eyes upon that glorious winter moon. Let her silvery light wash over you, filling you with peace and possibility. Listen to what she has to say to you. If it’s cloudy outside, she is still there! Just gaze into the sky and know that this night, this spell, belongs to you, whether you can see your blessed Wolf Moon or not.
Whisper to the Water: Lean over your jar or bowl of water, whispering your intentions for the year as if casting a wish into a pond. Whether it’s finding love, climbing Mt. Fuji, or finally learning to make a decent sourdough, pour your heart out! If you’re doing this in a body of water, swirl the water with your hands, toes, or all around your body as you whisper into the moonlit water.
Seal the Deal: Dip your fingers into the water, and with a flick of your wrist—the more theatrical the flick, the better!—sprinkle a few drops around your space to seal your intentions with the moon’s magic. When you leave the body of water, flick the water all around you to seal your intentions.
Snuff the Flame: Gently blow out your candle, sending a silent thank you to the moon and the universe for their guidance. Feel your intentions soar on your breath as it connects to the candle’s flame. Watch your spell float into the spirit realm as the smoke wafts from the newly extinguished candle, disappearing into the moon-drenched ether. So mote it be!
Remember Your “Wild”
And there it is, my magical ones! You’ve just performed your very own full Wolf Moon spell. Hug yourself, pet your familiars, drink some tea, and feel the silvery glow of your spell shimmering within you.
The Wolf Moon is a time to embrace your wild side, set intentions, and maybe howl into the night—your neighbor’s husky loves people! Humans who howl are even better!
Here’s to a year of magic, moonlit adventures, and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of mischief.
Until next time, keep your eyes on the skies, and let the moon illuminate your life’s path.
Happy howling!
With love and Wolf Moon magic,
~Jaye
